The U.S. Small Business Association's Boots to Business program has already trained more than 60,000 military personnel and their families.

The United States Small Business Administration gave a $1.5 million grant to the Institute for Veterans and Military Families at Syracuse University, in partnership with Cornell University’s School of Hotel Administration.

The grant comes as part of the administration’s Office of Veterans Business Development, which funds programs for military personnel and family transition assistance.

The business administration’s Boots to Business program will be implemented by the IVMF to give veterans and their families instruction in entrepreneurship, market research and business fundamentals through Cornell’s online platform. The program will also include additional learning paths in franchising or the business of agriculture if demand and market opportunity are evident.

Awardees of the grant must have displayed dedication and ability to provide entrepreneurial training to military personnel and their spouses. The Office of Veterans Business Development funds these 12-month projects — with four optional additional years, depending on funds — as part of a cooperative agreement.

Mississippi State University is also a recipient of the grant, receiving $824,100 for its Boots to Business online course.

Through the IVMF, Boots to Business will be made available to military personnel and their families stationed internationally in nine countries. The program has already trained more than 60,000 military personnel and their families.
